Creating Volume: Top 7 Ways to Give Your Hair a Lift

If your hair is flat, limp, or volume challenged, read on for seven simple ways to create lush, full-bodied styles.

1. Wash the lift in

Try a volume-building shampoo and conditioner like Redken High Rise Volume Shampoo and Conditioner or Biolage Volumebloom Shampoo and Conditioner. Remember to limit conditioner to ends—when applied to the scalp and roots, it weighs hair down and makes it limp.

2. Change your part

Flip your part to the opposite side of where it naturally falls to create instant volume at the crown. Another part changing trick that builds a lot of height: create a deep side part on the opposite side of your natural part and mist with a firm-hold hairspray like DESIGNLINE Freeze Spray Firm Hold. Wait a few minutes for it to dry, then flip hair back to its natural part and smooth hair into place.

3. Comb back

At the roots, lightly tease or backcomb your hair with a comb or teasing brush to create lift that lasts. Lightly brush over the very top strands of hair to camouflage the teased section and to create a full, smooth look.

4. Get a boost

A styling product like DESIGNLINE Root Boost does an amazing job of creating lots of volume and lift. Apply directly to the roots, tease or back comb, then finish with a strong hair spray for a style that can last all day.

5. Go upside down

For a fast, easy, no-fuss way to get some oomph, flip your head upside down while blow drying. Let gravity help you pull the hair away from your scalp as you dry. Finish with a hairspray like Paul Mitchell Super Clean Extra Hairspray, then stand up and smooth it out. This is a great trick for traveling, when you don’t have the suitcase space for extra products or tools. You can also refresh and boost already dry hair with this trick.

6. Roll it up

An age-old technique to create volume, apply hot rollers to dry hair, spritz on Kenra Design Spray 9 or a light hold spray and let the curlers set. Leave them in for as long as you like, then slowly unroll and gently brush out your hair. Apply more hair spray to hold the final look.

7. Apply dry shampoo

Dry shampoo is helpful for second-day hair, but it can also be a great product to combat flat, limp hair that’s been freshly washed. Dry shampoos like Sexy Hair H2No create body and texture that fine hair doesn’t have naturally. Simply spray at the roots, wait a few minutes, then scrunch and massage until you’re happy with the result.
